VW has published the first official teaser of the next generation Golf 9: Launch confirmed for 2028
The king is back, but under tension: Volkswagen reveals the first image of the future "ID. Golf"
Wolfsburg, Germany – In a move that marks the beginning of the end for the internal combustion era of Europe’s most popular model, Volkswagen has given the world its first official look at the ninth-generation Golf. This time, however, the sound of the TSI engine will be replaced for good by the hum of electricity, and the name promises to unite two worlds: meet the future ID. Golf.
A familiar silhouette, but "sculpted" by the wind
The teaser image, recently shown at a board meeting in Wolfsburg, shows a profile that will reassure conservative fans. Although the Golf 9 (or ID. Golf) is switching to a 100% electric drivetrain, the proportions remain unmistakable. We notice a steeper roofline and a prominent rear spoiler, essential elements for a low aerodynamic coefficient, vital for the autonomy of an electric car.
Sources close to the brand suggest that the design was inspired by the legendary Golf 4 and the success of the Golf 7, but with a modern "face", reminiscent of the ID. GTI concept. Moreover, the file of the published image bears the explicit name "ID. Golf", confirming that Volkswagen has decided not to give up the brand that has defined its identity for half a century.
The revolution under the hood: Rivian's SSP platform and DNA
Beyond the aesthetics, the real magic happens under the hood. The Golf 9 will be the first model built on the new SSP (Scalable Systems Platform) architecture. This is not just another platform for electric cars, but a massive technological leap compared to the current MEB (used on the ID.3 or ID.4):
- Ultra-fast charging: Thanks to the 800V system, the battery will be able to charge from 10% to 80% in just 12 minutes.
- Record range: "cell-to-pack" technology could propel the new Golf towards the 700 km threshold on a single charge.
- American software: Following the strategic partnership with Rivian, Volkswagen will implement a new operating system, much more stable and intuitive, resolving one of the biggest criticisms of previous generations.
Physical buttons are back by popular demand
In a rare show of corporate humility, Volkswagen seems to have learned from the mistakes of the Golf 8. The interior of the upcoming ID. Golf will mark the return of physical buttons on the steering wheel and for climate controls. The era of unreliable tactile "sliders" seems to have ended, with the German manufacturer once again emphasizing ergonomics and quality materials.
The dual strategy: Golf 8 remains "on the barricades"
The launch of the ID. Golf in 2028 does not mean the immediate demise of combustion engines. Volkswagen has confirmed that the current Golf 8 will receive a major update (likely a Mk8.5 “plus”) to remain relevant beyond 2030.
The big logistical change? Starting next year, production of the combustion model will be moved to the plant in Puebla, Mexico, freeing up the assembly lines at the "mother house" in Wolfsburg exclusively for the new electric Golf.
The verdict?
The Golf 9 has a huge mission: to prove that an electric car can be as practical, desirable, and “human” as its gasoline-powered predecessors. If the promises of the SSP platform and Rivian software come true, 2028 could be the year that skeptics run out of arguments.
