Skoda becomes the largest battery manufacturer in the Volkswagen Group

Škoda inaugurates new mega-battery factory in Mladá Boleslav: Investment of 205 million euros

MLADÁ BOLESLAV – In a strategic move that reconfirms the central role of the Czech Republic in the European automotive industry, Škoda Auto has officially inaugurated its new battery assembly facility for electric vehicles. Located right on the premises of its main plant in Mladá Boleslav, the new plant marks a historic milestone: the Czech manufacturer is, as of today, the largest supplier of fully assembled battery systems within the entire Volkswagen Group.

A huge investment in the technology of the future

The project, whose construction started in 2025, was completed in a record time of less than a year. With an investment of 205 million euros, the new production hall covers an impressive area of 55,000 square meters.

The objective is clear: to accelerate the transition to electric mobility. The new assembly line has a production capacity of 335,000 units per year, which means that, at full capacity, more than 1,100 battery systems will leave the factory gates every day to equip the group's electric models.

Robotic precision and “Cell-to-Pack” innovation

What makes this facility truly special is the extremely high level of automation. No fewer than 131 state-of-the-art robots work on the production lines, ensuring an automation level of 84%. This digital precision not only increases efficiency, but also guarantees the rigorous safety standards required for high-voltage components.

Furthermore, the plant implements revolutionary cell-to-pack technology. Unlike conventional methods, where individual cells are first grouped into modules, this technique allows the cells to be directly integrated into the battery pack. The result? A lighter structure, increased energy density and production costs reduced by up to 30%.

A pillar for the Volkswagen Group

The inauguration of this plant is not only a victory for Škoda, but a strategic step for the entire Volkswagen Group. The batteries produced in Mladá Boleslav will equip not only the Czech brand's models, such as the new compact SUV Elroq or the upcoming Epiq and Peaq, but also other electric vehicles based on the group's MEB+ platform.

"Through this investment, we are localizing battery production on an industrial scale, strengthening the resilience of the European supply chain," company officials said at the opening ceremony.

In the context of an increasingly competitive automotive market, where range and battery prices are decisive factors, Škoda is demonstrating that it does not just want to be a player in the electric age, but one of its technological leaders. Mladá Boleslav is no longer just a city where cars are assembled, but has officially become the competence center for batteries of the future in Europe.
