Mercedes-Benz confirms new generation A-Class for 2028: Thermal and electric versions on the MMA platform
The Great Comeback: Mercedes-Benz A-Class gets a new generation in 2028, despite initial plans to phase it out
In a turnaround that has surprised the entire automotive industry, Mercedes-Benz has decided to give a “second chance” to the most affordable model in its lineup. Although it was originally scheduled for final retirement in 2024, and then in 2026, the Mercedes-Benz A-Class will officially receive a fifth generation, scheduled to debut in 2028.
The decision marks a major strategic shift for the Stuttgart-based automaker. Under CEO Ola Källenius, Mercedes-Benz has been pushing its “Luxury First” strategy, which has focused on high-margin models (S-Class, G-Class, Maybach) at the expense of the compact segment. However, slowing demand for electric vehicles and the need to maintain a relevant market share against rivals BMW and Audi have forced the German giant to reassess its position.
Cutting-edge technology: MMA platform and 800V architecture
The upcoming A-Class will not be just a simple update, but a technological revolution for the compact segment. The new model will be built on the MMA (Mercedes Modular Architecture) platform, the same one that underpins the new CLA.
Unlike previous generations, this one has been designed as an “EV-first” platform, but remains compatible with combustion engines. Here are the main technical specifications that will define the 2028 model:
- Electric Version: It will benefit from an 800-volt architecture, allowing for ultra-fast charging speeds. Customers will be able to choose between two battery variants: 58 kWh (LFP - Lithium-Iron-Phosphate): For efficiency and a lower purchase price, 85 kWh (NMC - Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt): For extended autonomy, estimated to rival the 750 km promised by the new CLA.
- Thermal Versions: They will use 1.5-liter gasoline engines, equipped with mild-hybrid technology, offering front- or all-wheel drive.
- Traction: For the first time, standard electric variants will have propulsion (rear-wheel drive), while combustion models will retain front-wheel drive.
Design: A "Raised Hatchback" with Gorden Wagener's touch
A fascinating detail for design enthusiasts is that the aesthetics of the new A-Class were already approved in January 2024. This was one of the last major projects signed by Gorden Wagener, the legendary chief designer who officially left the company at the beginning of 2026, leaving his place to Bastian Baudy.
The new A-Class will retain the classic hatchback silhouette, but will adopt a higher driving position. This change is dictated by the need to integrate the batteries into the floor, but also has a strategic purpose: Mercedes wants to attract former B-Class customers by offering easier access and better visibility, without turning the car into a true SUV.
Who are the rivals?
The 2028 launch will put the Mercedes-Benz A-Class in direct competition with the upcoming Audi A2 EV and the new generations of the BMW 1 Series. Moreover, the electric version will have to face competition from the upcoming Volkswagen ID. Golf, a model that promises to redefine the compact electric segment.
"Design creates immense value, and the future for the next decade has already been drawn," Wagener declared at the start, suggesting that the new A-Class will be a model that will age beautifully, preserving the "Sensual Purity" philosophy.
