Fire alert at Stellantis: 700.000 cars recalled for service worldwide
Alert in Stellantis Garages: 700,000 Cars Recalled Due to Fire Risk
They say fire and water are opposites, but for automotive giant Stellantis, they have found an unfortunate way to interact under the hoods of hundreds of thousands of cars. A seemingly minor design flaw has triggered one of the largest service recall campaigns of the beginning of 2026, affecting approximately 700,000 vehicles globally.
What happened? "Short circuit" in the safety chapter
The problem, initially identified by the German regulatory authority KBA (Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt), concerns a defect in the insulation and positioning of components in the engine compartment. Specifically, in conditions of high humidity or in the event of water ingress, an unintentional electrical contact can occur between the starter terminal and the particulate filter pipe.
The result? An electrical arc that can lead to overheating and, in extreme cases, a spontaneous fire. To date, Stellantis has confirmed 36 incidents related to this issue, 12 of which resulted in actual fires. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported, but the risk is considered serious enough to mobilize service centers around the world.
Targeted models (Production 2023 – early 2026):
The campaign "sweeps" almost the entire group's portfolio, focusing on hybrid and gasoline models:
- Peugeot: 208 and 2008 (the most affected, with over 120,000 units in France alone).
- Citroën: C3, C4 and C3 Aircross.
- Fiat: The new Grande Panda.
- Jeep: Avenger (an extremely popular model in Europe).
- Alfa Romeo: Junior (formerly Milano).
- Opel / DS / Lancia: The Corsa, Mokka and DS3/DS4 models are also on the list.
Impact on customers in Romania
Romania is not spared from this shock wave. Although Stellantis has not published an exact figure for the local market, estimates indicate several thousand vehicles that will have to cross the threshold of authorized service stations.
Brands like Peugeot and Citroën (represented in Romania by Trust Motors) and Jeep/Fiat have a solid presence on our roads, and models like the Peugeot 2008 or Jeep Avenger have recorded notable sales in the last two years.
What Romanian owners need to know:
- Notification: Official importers and dealers will contact owners via registered letters or email, based on the registration database.
- Proactive Check: If you own a model produced between mid-2023 and early 2026, you can check the "Recall" section on the brand's official website by entering the chassis number (VIN).
- Costs and Duration: The intervention is free. The mechanics will install a larger protective cap on the terminals and adjust the distance between the components. The operation takes about 30 minutes, so you won't be without your car for long.
An image blow for Stellantis?
This massive recall comes at a delicate time for the group, which has faced other technical problems in the recent past (such as the infamous PureTech engines or Takata airbags). However, the rapid response and transparency that the group is now demonstrating — offering quick repairs before the number of incidents increases — is a sign of corporate maturity.
Journalist tip: If your car is on the list, don't delay your service visit. While 12 fires in 700,000 cars may seem like a small probability, it's not the kind of "lottery" you'd want to win.
Driving safety starts under the hood, and this time, Stellantis promises to “extinguish” the problem before it becomes an uncontrollable flame in their financial balance sheets or in the safety of their customers.
