Audi officially confirms a successor to the A8 sedan: The new model will debut at the end of the decade
Audi A8 is not disappearing from the range: Brand officials confirm the launch of a direct successor
Luxury enthusiasts have been looking towards Ingolstadt with trepidation lately. After Audi began to close the curtains on the current generation of the A8, closing orders in Germany, many feared that the classic sedan would be sacrificed on the altar of SUVs. Well, we have good news: the “Vorsprung durch Technik” is not abandoning the sedan format.
A brand official recently confirmed to the American publication Motor1 that the A8 story will continue with a new chapter, scheduled to debut towards the end of this decade.
Beyond speculation: the Q9 is not the "new A8"
The panic among enthusiasts was fueled by the confirmation of another massive model: the Audi Q9. Speculation suggested that this generously sized SUV would take over the top-of-the-range role, leaving the A8 sedan in the history books.
Audi representatives, however, clarified the brand's strategy: "The decision on a successor to the A8 has been made and we plan to present it towards the end of this decade. The Audi Q9 will expand Audi's portfolio to the top as a large luxury SUV," a spokesperson said.
Basically, Audi will play on two fronts at the highest level: it will offer an alternative for fans of the "high-riding" format through the Q9, but it will retain the elegance and dynamism of a limousine through the future A8.
What's happening with the current A8?
Launched in 2017 and refreshed in 2021, the current generation (D5) has reached the end of its life cycle. The retirement process is already in full swing:
- Germany: Orders have already been permanently stopped.
- Global Market: Next are the United States and China, markets where, traditionally, luxury limousines still enjoy resounding success.
- The transition: Until the new model appears (approx. 2028-2029), Audi will theoretically remain without a direct representative in the large luxury segment, temporarily leaving open ground for the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7 Series.
What should we expect from the successor?
Although technical details are still under wraps, the direction is clear: the future A8 will most likely be purely electric. The previously presented Audi Grandsphere concept is considered by many experts to be the aesthetic and technological “foundation” of the future model. We can expect an extremely aerodynamic silhouette, an interior that resembles a luxury lounge and advanced autonomous driving technologies.
| Feature | Current Audi A8 (D5) | Future Successor (Estimated) |
| Launch Date | 2017 (Facelift in 2021) | Late 2020s (Approx. 2028-2029) |
| Powertrain | Internal Combustion / Hybrid | Fully Electric (e-tron) |
| Platform | MLB Evo | PPE (Premium Platform Electric) |
| Market Positioning | Executive Luxury Sedan | Tech Flagship & Sustainable Luxury |
Conclusion: Patience is the key
Although fans will have to wait a few years to see the new model in showrooms, the official confirmation brings a breath of fresh air. In an automotive world that seems to be irremediably "SUV-ized", Audi chooses to preserve the tradition of the sedan, but adapt it to the technological demands of the future.
The A8 is not disappearing, it is just retiring to reinvent itself.
